Gateway to Lofoten

A Merge of Tradition and Modern Design

The design of the apartments located in Roest, Lofoten, is inspired by traditional fishing houses, reflecting the area's rich history with cod and stockfish. Designed by Manuela Hardy, the project aims to tell a story through form and color, while incorporating a futuristic twist.

The Gateway to Lofoten project draws inspiration from the old fishing houses and Roest's long-standing connection to cod fishing and stockfish production. The weather conditions in Roest have been ideal for stockfish production, with a strong historical link to Italy. However, the primary inspiration for the design comes from the fishing houses themselves, with a powerful twist in the form of mirrored gabled roofs.

What sets the Gateway to Lofoten apartments apart is their unique blend of local and traditional building customs with a futuristic touch. The design embraces the region's traditional materials and construction techniques while incorporating modern elements. It strikes a perfect balance between tradition and contemporary design, creating a harmonious and visually striking structure.

The realization of the design was driven by instinct and a desire for simplicity, surprise, and innovation. Manuela Hardy's methodology involved working on the forms and seeking a design that was both visually striking and forward-thinking. The result is a building that stands out while respecting the local architectural heritage.

The Gateway to Lofoten apartments measure 38 meters wide and 7.7 meters deep, spanning three stories. The building will feature a mix of studio apartments and larger units, catering to different needs and preferences.

While the apartments will function like any other residential building, the experience of living in the Gateway to Lofoten will be unparalleled. The design aims to create a sensation of floating on the sea while being firmly rooted on the shore, offering residents a unique connection to the surrounding environment.

The project is currently in the unbuilt stage, with an expected completion timeframe of a few years. Extensive research was conducted on the existing buildings in Roest, focusing on their materials, colors, and architectural characteristics. The design team aimed to incorporate these elements while ensuring the building's construction remained straightforward and efficient.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process is calculating the existing groundwork and determining the best approach to preserve and enhance it. The design team aims to utilize and support the existing foundation while creating a structure that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings.

The Gateway to Lofoten apartments, designed by Manuela Hardy, are a testament to the fusion of tradition and modernity. Inspired by the region's fishing heritage, the design incorporates local building customs and materials while introducing innovative elements. The mirrored gabled roofs add a touch of futurism to the structure, creating a visually captivating and harmonious architectural composition.
